Is “data” singular or plural?

I often see the word “data” used in different ways. Some people say “the data is,” while others say “the data are.” It’s a bit confusing—so is “data” actually singular or plural, and which one should I use in modern English?

I always use data is. To me, ‘data’ feels like a mass noun, similar to ‘information.’ Saying the data are sounds too formal or old-fashioned.
