Wow, that's a great question. I just learned it in yesterday's lesson.
In American English, the period usually goes inside the parentheses if the entire sentence is inside the parentheses.
For example: She went to the store. (It was closed when she arrived.)
But if the parentheses are just adding extra information to a sentence, the period goes outside the parentheses.
For example: She went to the store (it was closed when she arrived).
