Learn parts of a plant with their functions and example sentences.
- Flower
Function: Flowers attract pollinators and make seed that will someday grow into new plant.
Example sentence: Life is a flower of which love is the honey.
- Seed
Function: Seeds are little cases with a baby plant inside. The parent plant packs the seed with nutrition, just like a lunch. Seeds end up having much more nutrition that other parts of the plant.
Example sentence: These vegetables can be grown from seed.
- Leaf
Function: Leaves are food factories. Leaves have little openings that let air and water come and go. Leaves catch energy from sunlight and use it to turn to energy and water in to food.
Example sentence: One falling leaf heralds the coming of autumn.
- Stem
Function: The stem support the plant and carries water, nutrients and plant chemicals up and down to all parts of the plant.
Example sentence: The stem of the mushroom is broken.
- Root
Function: Roots are hidden underground but very important to the plant. Roots hold the plant steady in the ground, suck up water and nutrients from the soil and even store food for the future.
Example sentence:

Function: Fruits protect the developing seeds.
Example sentence: As fruit needs not only sunshine but cold nights and chilling showers to ripen it, so character needs not only joy but trial and difficulty to mellow it.
- Bud
Function: Buds are specialized to develop flowers or short shoots, or may have the potential for general shoot development.
Example sentence: The bud develops into a flower.
- Node
Function: A node is the part of the plant stem where the flowers, branches, and leaves first start to grow. Nodes can hold several leaves and buds that have the capacity of growing and spreading into branches. In some plants, the nodes can additionally produce adventitious roots.
Example sentence: Cut them off cleanly through the stem just below the node.
